The 2011 Marcialonga is ready to kick off tomorrow in Italy’s Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa. At 8.15 am the village of Moena will be welcoming 7.200 skiers from all around the world, and the 38th edition of the famous ski marathon will be served.
During the press conference held today in Cavalese, Marcialonga’s President Alfredo Weiss warmly welcomed all the athletes who will be at the start tomorrow morning. “The course is in perfect condition at the moment”, said Weiss, “and it will be groomed during the night, in order to be faultless tomorrow”. Weiss also praised the incredible job his team did in the past weeks, as 100.000 cubic meters have been produced to round the 70 km tracks off.
According to Italy’s best competitor Marco Cattaneo, the big favourite for tomorrow’s victory is Anders Aukland. The Norwegian won the Italian ski marathon in 2004 and 2008, and it looks in great shape at the moment. Of course, the Swedish team will be fighting hard with the marathon specialists Svärd and Ahrlin, who scored gold in the last two editions. Italy’s Marcialonga is the fourth leg of the 2011 FIS Marathon Cup, and the provisional leader Fabio Santus of Italy will also be at the start tomorrow, along with his countrymen Paredi, Carrara and Debertolis.
In the female race, Jenny and Sandra Hansson, along with Susanne Nyström might be viewed as the most favourite athletes.
Among the thousands of participants, 18 ‘Marcialonga’s Senators’ will be also on track tomorrow. The Senators are those who have taken part to any Marcialonga up to now.
The national RAI will broadcast the event live on Rai Sport 2 from 9.30 am to 12,00 pm, together with 6 other national channels around the globe.
