Baby and Mini in 2023. All other events confirmed
The 49th edition of Marcialonga is about to start, Sunday 30th January in Moena the Italian Minister of Tourism Massimo Garavaglia officially launches the race at 8 am o’clock, first line for the athletes of the prestigious circuit Visma Ski Classics.
With number 1, of course, Tord Asle Gjerdalen, already winner in 2015, 2016, 2017 and second in 2020 and 2021. He said aloud his wish to draw poker this year. Yet, as him, there are many other champions aiming to the victory because… Marcialonga is Marcialonga, as Gjerdalen himself declared. For many Scandinavian it is often more important than Vasaloppet.
Coming back to competitions with Marcialonga: Petter Eliassen, defined as the best “double poler” ever. He won Marcialonga in 2019 and gets back on skis with Team Robinson Trentino. Emil Persson, last year winner, have not been getting good results in this first part of the season, but he always represented a very strong fighter along the Cascata uphill. There are many protagonists, as the Norwegian Martin Sundby, annoyed by the forced quarantine due to a contact with a Covid-positive subject; he demonstrated what he is capable of in Val di Fiemme, during the Tour de Ski on Cermis.
The competition among women is exciting too. Britta Johansson Norgren is coming back after a long stop in the past season, due to some consequences of iced feet. The Swedish is very similar to Gjerdalen: she is 38, conquered three Marcialonga and won the last stage of the Visma Ski Classics. Above all, she has hunger for other victories. There is a young girl of 25, Ida Dahl, in her way, but also Lina Korsgren is a tough one, she was crowned with the laurel last year. Another Swedish, very good uphill, Frida Erkers: 9th at Prato Piazza Mountain Challenge, after a long quarantine and without training; 16th in La Venosta Time Trial at 2000mt of altitude, which she suffers. She is now training at Passo San Pellegrino in order to prepare to the altitude. There is also ‘her majesty’ Marit Björgen: she is the most ‘golden’ Olympic athlete, the most winning ever in cross-country skiing with medals, world cups and trophies.
The exposition “Marcialonga 50°” is in Canazei and celebrates the first 50 years of Marcialonga. Among many good news, a bad one: MiniMarcialonga and Marcialonga Baby are postponed to 2023.
SKY live broadcasting is confirmed, not only, Marcialonga is live on half-Europe televisions. Emotions, history and performances will write another open book, because Marcialonga is forever!
