Sensational, unbelievable, amazing…and much more. Not enough words to describe what is happening to the legendary Marcialonga, the long distance cross-country ski race along the Fiemme and Fassa valleys, planned to take place on January 30 2011 in Trentino region.
Over 5 months to the start - in Moena as usual - and the number of participants has reached 5413, considering both the 70 km and the 45 km races. ‘I really don’t know what to say’, the Marcialonga general manager Gloria Trettel said. ‘More and more people like this race, and this year’s entries rate have grown by 285% compared to same day last year. Plus, in 2009 once we reached the figure of 5000 participants, we had to close after two weeks’.
It is more than predictable that this could happen this year too, as the entry limit for 2011 competition is set at 6500 participants.
Next January, the two alpine valleys in Northern Italy will become a sort of a new Norwegian province, since 2.236 ‘vikings’ already registered for the race and get ready to cross the Alps, against the 1595 Italians and 886 Swedes who already booked their bibs.
Regarding the starting groups, up to today the group 201-500 is full and as established in the race rules, skiers will now be moved to next lower available one.
The 2011 Marcialonga is part of both the prestigious Worldloppet circuit and the FIS Marathon Cup (since 2000). Furthermore, next year’s Marcialonga forms the Combined Event ‘Punto3 Craft’ with 2011 Marcialonga Cycling (May-June) and Marcialonga Running (September).
While collecting the last entries for the 2011 ski-marathon, the Marcialonga OC keeps setting up the Marcialonga Running event scheduled for next Sunday, September 5th, whose 26km course runs from Moena to Cavalese and ends on the same Viale Mendini where the XC winter race finishes. As of today, the number of runners taking part in the race has reached 1.300.
