Marcialonga is truly the elixir of life. For cross country skiers, but not only for them, the first fifty editions gone by in the archives last January are only a part of the story of this everlasting top Italian event of narrow skis, which will be back on the scene on January 28th in Fiemme and Fassa Valleys.
The organizing committee coordinated by the general director Davide Stoffie has already been at work for some time, since the 30th January of last season, after celebrating Emil Persson’s victory, who signed the prestigious Marcialonga for the second time and put a serious mortgage on the final Ski Classics title. The Norwegian Magni Smedaas, also confirmed the Scandinavian dominance in the ski marathon, first controlling and then putting behind her all the most accredited opponents, including Ida Dahl, who ended up off the podium, but unbeatable instead in the overall season ranking, just ahead of Smedaas.
That it is a timeless event must have been thought by David Nilsson too, CEO of Ski Classics, who just a few days ago signed the contract with the president Angelo Corradini to seal the partnership between Marcialonga and Ski Classics until 2030! In these globally uncertain times, here is a good news coming from sport and more precisely from the cross country skiing world.
The satisfaction of Corradini and the whole entourage of the historical race from Trentino is obvious: “Marcialonga is really thankful for the trust shown and for this important renewal. Since the foundation of Ski Classics (Marcialonga is part of it since the first edition) we always believed in this challenge, which is becoming more and more important. Year after year, it has gained importance and notoriety, especially in the media. It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge David Nilsson and his team for the extraordinary professionalism, creativity and passion in the organization of this championship and in all the events that it consists of. We are all enthusiasts and sure that Ski Classics still has significant room for growth in the short term and that these spaces will be filled and put to good use in the near future.”
The long ski marathon of the last weekend of January will repeat the classic 70 km from Moena to Cavalese after the ascent up to Canazei, skirting the Avisio River and passing by the many villages of the Fassa and Fiemme Valleys, without forgetting the “light” version with the race stopping in Predazzo after 45 km.
Economic difficulties are slowing down the ride to large numbers of many events, in the whole world. After the Covid-19 period, the whole sport had a contraction. Marcialonga, states Davide Stoffie, is not exempt from this, however, registrations are confirming last year’s trend, numbers that according to projections should be around 7,000. The Russian athletes, who represented a very large nucleus before the conflict with Ukraine, are missing, but the Scandinavians are holding up well and the Italians are increasing.
The 51st edition will be full of side events, as has been the case for many years now. Room for young people with the “Baby” and Minimarcialonga and the competitive “Young”, but also space for solidarity with the Marcialonga Stars and for vintage with the Marcialonga Story.
The Marcialonga technicians are already “oiling” the cannons that, as soon as the temperatures will permit, will start the production of programmed snow to open a first part of the track in time for the Christmas period because, it is nothing new, the Marcialonga track is also at disposal of all cross-country skiers and the many tourists who traditionally flock to the Fassa and Fiemme Valleys.
