In the world, Italian cross-country skiing has had a great guiding light for many years. His name is Angelo Corradini, who is currently president of Marcialonga, the ski-marathon loved all over the planet and is part of Worldloppet, the association and international circuit that joins together the most important ski-marathons of every nation.
Recently, the general assembly was held in Japan and, after eight years at the helm of Worldloppet International Ski Federation, there was a changing of the guard at the presidency between Juha Viljamaa (FIN) and American Ben Popp. The Worldloppet delegates in unison then appointed the Finn as honorary president. Same role for Marcialonga’s president, Angelo Corradini, who was already president of Worldloppet for 12 years before Viljamaa's time. These two characters obviously play an important role in the world of popular races and have a great influence on the development of this sport. Two references of fundamental importance for the ski-marathons association.
‘There are two reasons for this decision: firstly, both Juha and Angelo have done so much for Worldloppet and cross-country skiing and by naming them honorary presidents we want to pay tribute to their efforts. Secondly, they are “visionaries’. Their influence is only positive for our sport and with this title we keep them involved”, said Kristina Hallik of the executive committee who proposed this nomination.
Angelo Corradini, who recently brought home for Marcialonga the Ski Classics “Event of the Year” title for the third time, was applauded: ‘I am the only one left among those present at the founding meeting for Worldloppet in Uppsala in 1978, my bond with this federation is deep. I wish only the best to Worldloppet, a long life and a successful future. As honorary president I will do my best to support this great institution’.
After collecting the applause, he has already set to work on 'his' Marcialonga. Next September 7th, the Marcialonga Running Coop is scheduled, but on the horizon for January 26th is the 52nd Marcialonga of Fiemme and Fassa, whose registration gear has already been set in motion, and with success.
