MARCIALONGA CLOSE TO THE RECORD OF 250.000 PARTICIPANTS

The 47th edition of Marcialonga will reach a legendary step and it is ready, on June 10^th, to open the registration to numerous Scandinavian passionate among others. On January 26th, 2020 the total amount of skiers will touch 250.000 participants from Marcialonga’s birth, when in summer 1970 four friends from Trentino region (Mario Cristofolini, Giulio Giovannini, Roberto Moggio and Nele Zorzi) chose to organize a skiing marathon which retraces Vasaloppet prints, the event they had took part being pleasantly surprised by.

On 7^th February 1971 took place the 1^st edition of Marcialonga of Fiemme and Fassa and participants were more than 1.000, a big result compared with expectation. The winner was Ulrico Kostner with the time of 3.12’51” ahead of Franco Nones, the Olympic Gold medalist of Grenoble 1968 and first Olympic champion for Italy in cross-country skiing history. From that date a lot of … snow has passed under bridges, and it is right to say that Marcialonga has reached the Swedish ski-marathon for what concern affection; moreover, most recently Visma Ski Classics has rewarded it for the second time in a row for its high-level organization giving the prize as Best Event of the challenge which involved all the most prestigious cross-country skiing events. Also, Peter Eliassen, winner of the last edition, affirmed that winning Marcialonga is one of the greatest goals of his sport life. Visma Ski Classics is ready to achieve an ambitious goal too, the ten-year one’s: “Every year we try to improve – say David Nilsson, Ski Clasics CEO – in particular facing on the next season when we will celebrate the ten-year with the purpose of strengths and some innovation”. Marcialonga will be the 6^th stage of the tenth Visma Ski Classics season and it will be protagonist on the 70-k course from Moena in Fassa Valley to Cavalese in Fiemme Valley. The ski-marathon has reached an excellent status very difficult to tie, the atmosphere is unique and the typical local villages of Trentino attract numerous tourists increasing the territory total income in addition to the skiers heart beats when the Cascata final climb will call them.
